John was born in Crescent City, CA and started fishing as soon as he could hold a pole. As a young child he would climb into the bow of his dads 16 ft closed bow fishing boat and nap while salmon fishing off Crescent City. Through high school he was consistently late for school when the salmon and steelhead were running in the local rivers. Later he worked the deck of several commercial fishing boats. He has commercially fished salmon, rockfish, shrimp, Dungeness crab and bottom fish as well as sport fishing the local waters for salmon, steelhead, sea run cutthroat trout and everything the local ocean waters have to offer. In the years since he commercially fished he has seen fish numbers around the area steadily increase (because of commercial restrictions) and believes that the area offers the best fishing in northern California.
