Salmon Fishing: 

We commonly catch Chinook (King) Salmon and Coho (Silver) Salmon. You can keep Chinook Salmon, but must release Coho Salmon.

  • California ocean record is 65 lbs 4 oz and was caught off Crescent City in 2002. 
  • Daily Maximum Catch = 2  Minimum Length = 20″ 
  • Average Weight Range = 8 – 30 lbs
  • Salmon are caught to the 40 lbs range every year sometimes even a little larger.

RockFISH or Bottom Fishing:

When people use the terms “rockfish” or “rock cod” in a general way, they are actually referring to a complex array of rockfish. Black rockfish are by far the most common catch here in the northwest (about 60-80% of our catch).

Vermillion Rockfish

Here are some other varieties you may find on the other end of your line: Blue Rockfish, Vermillion Rockfish, Canary Rockfish, China Rockfish, Yellowtail Rockfish, Quillback Rockfish, and Copper Rockfish.

Other common catches include: Lingcod, Cabezon, Kelp Greenling and Rock Greenling 

2023 Rockfish Fishing Information: Season is open from May 15 - Oct. 15
Maximum Catch Per Day, 10 in aggregate

 Rockfish, no minimum length
 Cabezon, Minimum length 15” and 3 fish limit, included in aggregate
 Greenlings, Minimum length 12”, included in aggregate 

Average Weight Range Rockfish, 2 – 8 lbs, some species much larger
Average Weight Range Cabezon, 3-10 lbs

Lingcod





Season is concurrent with rockfish
California record is 56 lbs and was caught off Crescent City in 1992.  Lingcod, Minimum Length 22″ and 2 fish limit.                                       Average Weight Range Lingcod, 4-35 lbs

Pacific Halibut





The recreational fishery for Pacific halibut usually opens May 1, but has not been set yet this year check back for updates. The daily limit is one fish, with no minimum size limit.

Pacific Halibut in this area typically range up to about 80 lbs but every year larger ones are caught, some over 100 lbs.

Albacore





Albacore is primarily done in late summer when the water offshore warms and is very weather dependent.

Distance to the fishing area can range from 10 to 50+ miles offshore however when the fish are located the action can be very fast.
